Relaxer Day 1 with Miss Tress!

Hey all! There’s always three or four days a year that fill me with great relief and today just so happens to be one of them… Relaxer Day! Woohoo! My new growth is crazyyyyyy thick because I naturally have thick hair like no matter how hard I try, it’s been like a month or so since I could run my finger through my hair and feel my scalp. However, I had a different feeling toward my new growth during this stretch, I loved it! I mean don’t get me wrong, I love my natural locks but for the past few years my new growth has come as a “beautiful burden” to me but this time, I constantly wanted to play with it and such. So, I think transitioning is definitely going to be considered, but that’s another post. We’re all here to chat about my relaxer day and my results so let’s get started!

So, my mum usually does my relaxer because she is a professional hairdresser. However, since the week prior to my relaxer, I did no detangling of any kind and my hair LOVES to tangle (my new growth), I just left my hair in a bun and moisturized and sealed the ends every two days. Therefore, fast forward to Friday night, my hair was in a tangled hot mess. Back to my mother, she is a professional BUT she loves to do whatever she is doing very quickly and I knew if she had to part my hair to apply the relaxer in that state, she would show my hair no mercy.

I usually apply my COC oil mix to my hair before relaxing but this time I applied it and detangled my hair while doing so. So I divided my hair into four sections, applied the oil mix to my scalp and gave myself a scalp massage. I then placed the oil on my hair shaft, finger detangled and then detangled with my wide tooth comb. I braided each section after this process, and trust me, it was a crazy long one! I then took the four braids and placed them into a bun, Bantu-knot type thingy and secured with an ouch less ponytail holder. I covered my hair with a stocking cap( to prevent oil stains on my pillow and all over my bed) and them tied my satin scarf.

The next afternoon, we began! My mum used the Kids Organics Hair Softening System which is geared to texlaxing however, my natural hair pattern gets straight really fast so it’s almost as if I relax. Anyway, so she applied relaxer to my hair in 3 sections and due to my extreme amount of new growth, we used the entire container of relaxer (scraping product of the sides included).  She left it on for about 20 minutes and we then rinsed and neutralized my hair with the shampoo in the set, however the small amount of shampoo was no match for my hair’s thickness so we had to use another neutralizing shampoo from the TCB brand.

imageI proceeded to deep condition my hair with my Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner for about 30 minutes. I rinsed and didn’t have to detangle because I was like 1 second post and that conditioner is tangle-eraser magic! I then t-shirt dried for about 15 minutes and here are the results!

I then airdried my hair until it was 90% dry. My mom then applied the Brazilian Kerating Hair Straightening Serum and Gloss Spray to my hair and blowdried. She reapplied the products and flat-ironed my hair on 350 degrees. So, the big question is…. Did I make my goal of a healthy bra-strap length by the end of summer…… Well the answer is….*drumroll please* YES! I think that definitely calls for an emoticon celebration!

I was so thrilled and my hair happened to be in wayyyyyy better condition than I thought it was in after all those pool and beach-filled summer days. I actually learnt that leaving my hair alone every once in a while doesn’t hurt that much. My hair definitely taught me a great lesson during this stretch: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger ! It’s relaxer days like these when I meet my goals that I am inspired and I become even more dedicated to my hair journey because I see that hard work pays off and if anyone is reading this right now and feel like giving up on your hair, trust me, I know it’s hard and that you feel lazy sometimes but for every down you have on your journey, you will have a ton more of ups. So never give up because you can do it!

On a lighter note🎶 (lol), where does my hair journey take me next you ask? Well, I had said in an earlier post that I was going to trim my ends but to my surprise, they were in tip-top shape so as the old saying goes, Why fix something that’s not broken? So my goal for my next relaxer is to maintain my healthy ends with some SERIOUS TLC because I am noticing just a smidge of thinning , so I want to nip it in its bud stage and you can never have too much thickness so I am also trying to gain some more thickness. My next length goal however, is to be mid-back length by August, 2015!( God Spare life of course) and I want my hair to completely cover my bra strap by April,2015.

1. I have a phobia for food that is sweet. I mean, it’s just yuck. I think dessert should be sweet and food should be salty, spicy, zesty etc. So, your girl be having some serious problems with sweet potatoes and honey BBQ chicken!

2. My life’s goal is to find the cure for at least one type of cancer. (Quick Story! I had a serious case of food poisoning, so I went to the hospital and somewhere in between running my ivy and taking a blood test I got into a heated “debate” with my doctor on wether or not a cure for cancer can be found. Of course, I didn’t have the years of medical training and so forth but my hope and faith was a force to be reckoned with) So, that’s when I decided that I absolutely needed to do this!

 3. love to dance! I just can’t describe it or how it makes me feels but somewhere between the beat of the music and remembering the steps, I lose myself and become a completely different person and I LOVE it!

4. I am an online shopping addict but with stores like Charlotte Russe and Forever 21 in existence, can you blame a girl?

 5. I am trilingual; I can speak English, Spanish and French.

11. I love to daydream and stare into space. I think it’s a great way to relax your mind and escape from the world even if it’s only for a minute.

My favourite colour is pink/ purple…. I can’t pick one of them!

Deep Condition that hair gurl! It’s the most important thing that I think someone can do on their hair journey. Before mine, I never DCed, but as I began doing it weekly I saw a MAJOR difference in my hair’s health.

3. Who is your celebrity hair crush?

Nicki Minaj…. Omg! Her hair is absolutely gorgeous..I love it so much! It is relaxed, healthy, long and beautiful. All a girl can ask for!

4.What is your #1 hair regret?

Well, when I first relaxed my hair, it was superrrr thick and long… It was between mid back length and waist length but when my hair was natural… My mom never let me wear it in other style except cornrows, so when I had long straight hair all I wanted to do was flat iron it and wear it out all day, every day so after awhile heat damage shoved its way into my life and. I had to chop it all off to about armpit length. So my #1 regret would be abusing my luscious locks with heat.

5. What is your favourite food?

My favourite food is sphagetti and meatballs! Yum!

6. Who is your current favourite hair blogger?

Ooohh! That’s a toughie… There are so many but I would have to say Jen of Just Grow Already.

I started my journey in April, 2013… About 1 year and 4 months ago.

MIssing in Action: Miss Tress!

Hey all! So I have been MIA for a bit and I just wanted to share my past present and future events with you guys in a quick little update on my hair and life as well as some posts you can look forward to on my blog, coming this fall.

First to begin with, my hair! So I have been going to the beach and pool like crazy! Which meant I had to say adios to my super duper hair pampering plans for the summer. In one of my previous posts on my updated summer hair regimen, I shared with you my plans for my hair during vacation but that was the furthest from what really happened. I didn’t neglect my hair 100% of course! I still washed, deep conditioned and even moisturized and sealed(when I felt like it). As a result of my inconsistency, I am not quite certain if I made my hair length goal of a healthy bra strap length at the end of summer. Currently, my hair is in an airdried state because it got wet in the rain after I styled it in flexi-rods for my birthday which was yesterday ! Curse that rain! 👎 I am now about to enter my pre-relaxer prep week where I wear my hair in really loose buns and oil it daily and of course, I don’t wash it.

I will be doing my first relaxer update on my blog in a few days, when I relax my hair during the last week of August. I do plan on doing a little trim, goal length or not, because I put my hair through quite a lot during these past few weeks and I think my ends deserve a fresh start. I also think that my regimen hasn’t been consistent at all, product wise, for a while, because all Sumer I have been using whatever I got my hands on for my regimen, so I am also going to assess my hair products and choose which I will be using from September to December for my other relaxer stretch. Hopefully, with some consistency, my hair can bounce back really well from my trim and I can see great length retention , so look out for that post as well!

Now unto life, I enjoyed two vacations with my family and I am really looking forward to going back to school in September and of course blogging. My blog goal from September is to post on Sundays and Fridays which I hope aimcan maintain. You can also look out for collaboration blog posts, alotttt of product reviews, my weekly wash Dayaries, some fun tags, a blog award and new categories of posts based on fashion and my different routines which I do to maintain  a healthy, beautiful body. (Co) Wash Dayaries #6: Out with the Old and In with the New

So hey everyone! Today is my first co-wash day since I started my Updated August Hair Regimen. I was super excited to try out my new products and the whole co-washing concept.

Status: 11 weeks post 

Focus: Moisture and Protein

Pre-poo/ Deep Condition(Wednesday night 10:17 p.m)- I started out on my old Princess crown braids. After taking them down, I sectioned my hair into four. I then applied my Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Balm from root to tip of each section while lightly finger detangling. After completing all sections, I twisted each section and secured with a hair tie. I then put on a plastic cap followed by my satin scarf.

Co-wash ( Thursday morning 6:26 a.m)- I took down my twists and divided my hair into two sections. I then applied my Dark and Lovely Au Natural Cleansing Conditioner focusing mainly on my roots. I then used my shampoo massage brush to work in the product, clean and stimulate my scalp. I rinsed that section and repeated the same steps on the other. I then sprayed both sections with my Moisturizing Leave-in mix ( Hello Hydration conditioner, water and glycerin).

Airdry ( 6:50 a.m)- I dried my hair using a cotton t-shirt for about 10 minutes. I then sprayed my Leave-in moisture mix again, applied my Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Conditioner as my leave-in and my Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Dry Oil while lightly finger detangling.I then allowed my hair to dry.

Styling (10:15 a.m)- I moisturized and sealed my hair using the LCO method where I applied my moisturizing leave-in mix, my One N’ Only Argan Oil Styling Cream and my Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Dry Oil. I then placed my hair into a loose high bun…. I know I’m supposed to be sticking to my Princess Crown Braids but I get bored really easily and one style is just killing me so I think I am going to do another protective style for the other 3 days ( tutorial to be posted soon). 

Overall Thoughts: I enjoyed this wash day and how easy and effortless it was, not to mention the major time reduction with Cowashing. I also really liked using new products and seeing how they worked on my hair. I am so excited to review them! I got a little more tangles in my hair during this wash day but my shedding was the same as in the previous weeks so I am not quite alarmed. However, I am trying to address the cause of my tangles.

Overall Time: 3 hours and 41 minutes( excluding overnight deep condition time)

The Relaxed Hair Journey Tag!!!

1. What is your current length and where did you start?                                                                         I am currently around BSL- bra strap length(My hair has layers.. So some parts are still BSB- back shoulder blade) and I started at APL-armpit length.

2. What is your goal?                                                                                                                               Healthy, thick waist length hair gurll !!!

3. How long have you been relaxed?                                                                                                       I got my first relaxer in 2011 so I have been relaxed for about 3 years now.

4.What made you decide to be relaxed over natural ?                                                                                Well as a 12 year old who had mega thick, waist length hair, I easily traded in painful comb sessions filled with tears and Ouch!(es) for long, straight voluminous, EASY TO MANAGE hair!

5.Would you ever go natural?                                                                                                                          Of course! I definitely see myself being natural in the next few years…. I am not up for the transition period right now but I will surely attempt it in the next two years.

6. When did you start your hair journey?                                                                                                 I started my hair journey in April,2013.

7.Who/what inspired you to start?                                                                                                           Well, I stumbled across some photos of my hair when it was newly relaxed and I saw how long and thick it was and then I looked at a picture of my hair in that moment and I saw the drastic change. My hair became relatively thin and much shorter because I was just flat ironing my hair week after week, no heat protectant, no moisturizer and wearing it down everyday …. So of course my hair became dry and damaged and from then on I set out to get back my thick, long relaxed hair.

8.Can you quickly share your regimen?                                                                                                   I pre-poo, shampoo and condition weekly on Sundays. I deep condition every other week and on the week that I don’t deep condition, I do a protein treatment. I always airdry my hair and after I will do a flexi-rod set or a braidout(depends on where I am in my stretch). I moisturize and seal about 5-6 times for the week. I relax between 12- 14 weeks  post and only use direct heat when I relax.

9. What’s your favourite hair product ?                                                                                                   After my vacation experience it will be without a doubt, Beautiful Texture Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner. I’ve always loved  this product but I am obsessed with it now. It is awesome!!! It makes my hair feel great even when it’s in its worst condition i.e. After a long day in sand, sea and sun. Not to mention it is a deep conditioner, leave-in and moisturizer all in ONE! If you haven’t tried it, I definitely recommend it.

10.Have you found your staples?                                                                                                               I definitely have products which I will keep around for a longggggg time, however, I am product junkie so I love to try new products and will keep on doing so as long as I breathe. Tehe!

11.What are some of the reactions you get from others?                                                                       Well my family thinks that I spend wayy to much time on my hair but they give me a lot of compliments as well. Strangers and friends are aWays blown away and they constantly ask me what I do and what I use, not to mention the tons of compliments which I am all grateful for as well as the occasional inquiry about where I get my “weave” done. Hunnayy! I grew this! ( Quick Story! I went to dance class one day and a new girl to the class kept staring at me so I just proceeded and tried to ignore her constant uncomfortable glares. So that continued until the end of the class when she approached me and was like… And I quote ” OMG, you actually have thick, healthy RELAXED hair, I have never seen that before” so I replied and said that any hair can be healthy as logic as you take proper care of it, which was followed by a 10 minute discussion on healthy hair practices blah! Blah! Blah!

12.Name your favourite protective styles.                                                                                               A lot of buns and braids…. Actually my most recent protective style obsession is Princess Crown Braids.

 

 

 

Wash Dayaries #5 : Recovery Mode On!

Hey all! So as you may or may not have noticed I didn’t post about my wash day for last week. This was due to  my spur of the moment vacation plans. I left on Wednesday 23rd July to attend my cousin’s wedding and vacationed for 10 days. I just got back this morning and while unpacking and settling back into my usual life, I decided to restore my hair to its usual self being that today i.e. Sunday is my wash day. While on vacation, I went to the beach like crazy and even though I washed more than 5 times in 10 days and did little things to spruce my hair back up, I know I needed to restore my hair and treat it from all the manipulation that comes with the beach. So let’s begin!

Status: 11 weeks post

Focus: Protein

Prepoo ( 11:08 a.m)- I divided my hair into two sections and working on one section at a time, I applied my COC oil mix to my scalp and hair shaft and then lightly finger detangled my hair. I braided each section and secured with a rubber elastic.

Shampoo and Condition (12:17 p.m) – I them hopped into the shower and rinsed both braids. I then used the Garnier Fructis Hydra-recharge Shampoo and Conditioner to wash my hair. I applied the shampoo to one section at a time and worked it into my scalp with my Shampoo massage Brush working it in small, circular motions. It got my hair super clean in both washes! I then Followed up with the conditioner and let it sit for about 25 minutes while I took a shower.

Deep Condition( 12:40 p.m)-  I focused on protein for this wash day because while on vacation, I only used my moisture deep conditioner so I decided to balance out my moisture and protein to give my hair some strength. I also realized that today was my scheduled protein treatment also, which worked out great. I mixed my COC oil mix with my Organics Tea Tree Cholesterol as well as  my Organics Hair Mayonnaise.( Quick Story! As a protein deep conditioner, I always used the Organics Hair Mayo but for several months now I couldn’t find it so I used the other product from this line which was the Tea Tree Cholesterol and it worked well enough. However, while on vacation I went into a drug store and saw that they had the Hair Mayo and I was so happy. I literally began to do mini jumps in the hair aisle and was giggling and smiling. Weird, I know! So I bought 3 containers and brought it home which is why you will see it mentioned for the first time in my blog post!) I then applied the mix to my hair and covered with a plastic cap. I sat under my Gold N’ Hot Deep Conditioning Cap for about 30 minutes and then let my hair cool. I got caught up in some stuff so I took some time to rinse it out but when I did my hair felt strong but moisturized so I will definitely be using both conditioners together for my protein treatment from now on.

Airdrying(2:35 p.m)- I t-shirt dried my hair for 30 minutes and then I applied my leave-In moisture mix, my Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner( Yes Hun! You saw a right, a conditioner that can be used as a leave-in) and followed it up with my Garnier Fructis Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment. After, I left my hair to airdry.

Styling(4:10- 5:00 p.m)- I didn’t allow my hair to fully airdry as I would be protective styling from now until the end of August at least. I made this decision simply to give my hair a break from every day manipulation. So my hair was about 60 % dry. I firstly oiled my scalp using a mixture of Jamaican Black Castor oil and Africa’s Best Growth oil. I then moisturized and sealed my hair in four sections using the LCO method where I applied my moisturizing leave-in mix as my liquid, my One N’ Only Argan Oil Styling Cream as my Cream and my Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Dry Oil as my Oil. I divided my hair again into two sections this time and placed a side part at the front of my head. I then placed my hair into my protective style of choice: Princess Crown Braids (following from step 3).

Overall Thoughts: I was truly surprised and impressed by the amount of shredded hair lost during this wash day being that I am 11 weeks post and my hair suffered several days of sea, sand and sun. I am truly happy with my new found protein treatment mix as I feel it has definitely strengthened my hair so that it can succesfully make it to 14 weeks post. I also enjoyed the decrease of time that I had to spend on my wash day. Since this is my first wash day in August, I will now be starting my new regimen which you can see here. Therefore my next wash day or should I say Cowash day will be on Thursday which will also be when I take down my princess crown braids.
