Battle of the Cowashes: Creme of Nature vs. Carol’s Daughter

Hey guys! So as you may know, a few weeks ago, I got into co-washing my hair! For a while back, I had tried co-washing with the carols daughter cleansing conditioner and hated it! But recently, I took a leap of faith and tried the Creme of nature cleansing conditioner and to my surprise, fell in love with it. Today, I decided to do my mid week Cowash with both conditioners in order to witness first hand the difference in performance so that I could further understand why I liked the Creme of nature brand and not the Carols daughter brand. Disclaimer: This post is not sponsored and all views and opinions expressed are personal.

1. Packaging

  • So the first thing I noticed were that both products came in 12 oz bottles which have pumps. I honestly dislike pumps in the packaging of hair products because I have dense, thick hair and I need a lot of product to coat my strands sufficiently. Therefore, pumps require a lot of extra energy in order to obtain an adequate amount of product and simply seems inconvenient to me.
  • The packaging of the CON seemed more artistic, vibrant and expressive which I liked while the CD had a sleek, minimalistic appearance both of which were really nice, however, given my personality, I preferred the CD package as the CON package seemed a bit crowded in my opinion.

2. Claims

  • CON claims to gently cleanse and remove product buildup which it definitely does as my scalp was extremely clean after washing, give exotic shine which I didn’t exactly notice a difference in , preserve hair color which I cannot really assess since my hair has never been color treated and remove frizz which I cannot agree with as the section washed with CON tended to be a bit mor frizzy than the side washed CD.
  • CD claims to deeply moisturize which I do not totally agree with as it moisturized my hair but not as intensely as the CON did , improve softness which it definitely did as it made my hair extremely smooth and manageable, prevent frizz which it did due to its smoothing property and therefore while airdrying the side cleansed with CD had less frizz, color safe which I cannot comment on as I do not have color treated hair, Detangles which it does but the CON has more slip and therefore Detangles better giving me less shedding and breakage and strengthens which it does due to its extremely useful ingredients.

3. Main ingredients

  •  CON has Argan oil and Vegetable oil which conditions hair and provides shine, lactic acid which smooths hair and restores its strength and elasticity, and keratin which replenishes the hair’s natural protein.
  • CD has glycerin which attracts moisture from the environment to the hair shaft ,agave extract, which attracts moisture to the hair shaft and also strengthens it, absorbic acid which helps build protein and strengthens hair Shea butter which intensely moisturizes, biotin/ vitamin b5 which thickens hair, vitamin e which stimulates growth of the hair follicles and linoleic acid which maintains scalp health.

4. Directions

  • Both products direct users to apply the product and massage it into the hair. Then leave it for 3-5 minutes and thoroughly rinse.

5. Application

  •  CON applies thicker and creamier than CD as it has more slip and therefore coated my hair strands especially my new growth easier than the CD.

6. Feeling after 5 mins

  •  I ended up leaving the cowashes in my hair for about 20 minutes as I got caught up in my shower. However, as I rinsed out the CON my hair felt extremely moisturized especially my new growth while my hair felt super smooth but not as moisturized when rinsing out the CD.

7. Detangling Property

  • Both products Detangled my hair great however, I got a bit more shedding with the CD Cowash which was ironic since it claimed to strengthen hair.

8. Meeting its claims

  • CON met all the claims except one which was its claim of removing frizz.
  • CD met all the claims except two which were its claims of intense moisturization and detangling due to its lack of slip.

9. Usage of Products

  • My hair feels really great when using both products honestly. However, I feel as though they would function better at different points in my stretch. Therefore, I decided to use the CD during my 1-6 wk post period as I would not require as much slip and detangling property and its smoothing property would enable me to wear my jumbo flexi-rod sets and other styles which require somewhat sleek hair.
  • Also I would use the 7-12 week post period as I would require and intense amount of moisture and slip which the CON provides. Even the CON promotes frizz, I usually wear my hair in protective styles during this phase and therefore it would not be as great of a problem.

Wash Dayaries #25: Sticking at it!

It’s time for another wash day! So I attended a pool party on Saturday and even though I took the necessary steps to reduce any damage and drying to my hair by the chlorinated water, as expected, my hair still felt super dry. So as soon as I got home on Saturday, I assembled my ammunition of hair products and got to work!

I sectioned my hair in four and decided to apply the Carols Daughter Monoi Anti-breakage Hair Mask to each section. I diluted the mask with some water as it was super thick and want spreading very well through my hair. I thought I would use it by itself simply to see how great it would perform on my hair alone. After coating my hair, I covered with a plastic cap and wrapped a satin scarf around my headband went straight to bed.

The next morning. I shampooed with the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Shampoo and followed with the matching conditioner. On rinsing out the deep conditioner, I must admit that my hair felt super strong and for being 11 weeks post, my shedding was great! The shampoo and conditioner did their job as usual and wash day was going my way.

I then t-shirt dried my hair for about 5-6 hours and finally got to styling in the evening. I wanted some cute curls but my laziness got the better of me so I did my jumbo flexi rod set using 5 jumbo flexi-rods using my Creme of nature Argan oil leave-in, Carol’s daughter hair milk styling butter, Lotta Body Setting Lotion and Creme of nature Argan oil treatment in that order!

After a few hours, I realized that drying was taking forever #thickhairproblems, so I thought maybe an hour under my hooded dryer wouldn’t hurt! After taking down my rods before going to bed, I coated my hand with some Argan oil to reduce frizz and I was loving how soft and well defined my curls were! The dryer gave it a very smooth, sleek finish and I think I found a new favorite styling combo with the Carols Daughter Hair milk styling butter and the Lottabody Styling Lotion because my curls had an amazing hold but was not stiff or crunchy.

I took this as the perfect opportunity to practice my pin curling so I pin curled each of the 5 sections to preserve my set, tied with a satin scarf and went to bed. I took it down this morning and I thought that the set was really nice but I still didn’t like it to the point where I felt the need to wear it down so I opted for a cute curly ponytail!

My hair feels super soft and my new growth is moisturized! While touching my hair, I could hardly believe that I am 11 weeks post. I hope you enjoyed wash day with me this week. How was your wash day? Let’s chat. Don’t forget to follow my blog and follow me on IG @iam_misstress to keep up with the hair fun!

Love It or Leave It Product Review: CALA Head Massager

Hey guys! So a few days ago I went to my local beauty supply store and was browsing through the aisles when I saw the CALA Head Massager! Even though I have a Vitagoods Massager, I thought it may be fun to try out the Cala brand as it was quite inexpensive and seemed effective.

It came in the above packaging and has the same appearance. As soon as I got home, I whipped it out, unraveled my hair and got to massaging.  It works simply by pressing the prongs of the massager against the top of your head and they then elongate and move downward into the scalp.

The benefits of this tool claim to be:

    1. Increased circulation to the scalp which stimulates hair follicles and is great for growth

    2. Therapeutic effect as its ticklish sensation relaxes the mind and body

My first impression were that the prongs were very gentle on my scalp and gave a bit of a relieving, ticklish feel. However, the one thing I disliked about the tool is that it seemed to only massage the same spots of my head even though I changed its orientation. It didn’t thoroughly massage my scalp.

I feel as if this product would be excellent daily  when applying oil to your scalp as a method of spreading the oil faster and increasing the blood circulation around hair follicles, however, I do not think it’s effective to be used to remove buildup since it doesn’t cover the entire scalp and its small prongs are not suitable for lifting dirt and sweat particles off the scalp.

The prongs however, are very smooth which prevents any scalp irritation and AIDS in the relaxing sensation one gets when using the tool which I absolutely love. The design of the product is great and very user friendly even though sometimes my hand hurts from prolonged usage.

    Overall I rate it : 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I hope this review helped you all and it was enjoyable. Don’t forget to follow my blog to be updated on all the hair fun and catch up with my almost daily IG posts!

5 Summer Hair Care Tips To Maintain Your Soft, Healthy Tresses

Hey guys!!!!! Summer is here and while we’re going to be experiencing those sun-kissed baths and adventures, it’s super easy for our hair to become dry and brittle in this time period and therefore breakage isn’t far away! So, I compiled a few tips to help you maintain the heart of your hair which you worked so hard to attain while still reveling in those memorable days and nights!

    1. Less Heat Styling– During the summer months, the temperatures are at its annual climax and the heat and humidity is insane. Just think of the added stress your hair undergoes when it has to experience the environmental heat as well as heat from styling tools! Your hair can become extremely dry and will not only look frizzy but also very damaged. One can opt for heartless styles such as braid outs and twist outs which are great for your hair’s  health and also gives that tousled, beach appearance.

    2. Protective Styles– Keeping your hair tucked away off your shoulders and tucked away is the absolute most effective way to combat and damage which may occur in the summer…. But let’s be real, sometimes we just want that”wind blowing in your hair” freedom. So, I advise to do protective styles in moderation, maybe twice or three times per week. However, if you’re a person that enjoys your hair being tucked away, feel free to tuck it up as much as you would like.

    3. Acessorizing for Protection – For those of us who still want to keep our hair down, using hair accessories such as hats and headbands can help reduce hair damage. They limit friction between your hair, the wind and the sun and therefore damage to your hair strands is minimal because your hair is not being manipulated extensively by the environmental elements.

    4. Sunscreen Hair Hack- Products which contain spf are usually loaded with chemicals and very expensive. As a result, one simple hair hack is to apply the remainder of sunscreen on your hands to your hair after applying it to your skin! It’s super fast, easy and protects your hair strands from the UV rays of the sun which can lightening hair and dry out the moisture within your strands.

    5. Saturate Hair with Water and Oil before Swimming-  wetting hair before swimming fills it with water and so it can long absorb any more water when you get into the pool or ocean. Think of your hair as a sponge! Coating it with oil lock in the moisture from the water and creates a barrier between your hair strands and the pool or sea water so it just slides of your strands, causing them no harm!

Well, I hope these tips help you to maintain your hair and that you have the most fun- filled vacation ever!!!!! Don’t forget to follow my blog to keep up with the hair fun and follow me on IG @iam_misstress for more hair pics and almost daily uploads.

The Best Protective Style Ever: Princess Crown Braids

So let me begin with a special shoutout to one of my most active followers….@teamsavingourstrands! This post is dedicated to you since you gave me the idea for this post with your request.

If you were one to follow my blog from its conception, and you previously followed my old IG account then you are no stranger to my absolute favorite protective style which I call Princess Crown Braids. Don’t let the name fool you…. It’s extremely easy and simple!

In a nutshell, I moisturize, seal, create a side part, do two large cornrows around the perimeter of my head, tuck the ends of each braid under each other in the back of my head and then I slick my edges.

Super easy!!!!! It’s an awesome protective style and I am going to tell you all the reasons why!

    1. It causes no breakage and no tension on the the hair and edges because your hair is in a huge, thick braid which lessens the pulling and tugging on the hair as would a bun since there are no hair ties.

    2. It’s also very easy to preserve by simply sleeping on a satin bonnet or a satin scarf as a result, it can last for up to a week without manipulation.

    3.  You can easily moisturize and seal your ends without undoing the hairstyle because you can just take down the pins , unravel the ends of the braid, moisturize, seal , rebraid and reposition! This is great because even though your hair is in a protective style, it will not become super dry.

    4. It’s super chic! Not only are many variations of this hairstyle being worn all over the world but it’s absolutely beautiful and effortless. It’s face framing and therefore accentuates any casual look.

    5. It doubles as a braid out! When unraveling both braids, you will soon realize that your hair has some luscious, well-defined waves which make for a super cute braid out.

Braid out? See for your self…..

I hope, you enjoyed this post and if you try this hairstyle definitely let me know! Follow me at my new IG account @iam_misstress and tag me so that I can see! Don’t forget to flow my blog also so that you never miss out on the fun!

    Wash Dayaries #24- Hair Heaven!

Hey guys! And the wash day posts have resumed……

I started off with a hot oil treatment, which I haven’t done in a while. I simply applied coconut oil to my hair in four sections and allowed it to sit for approximately 2-3 hours. I used one oil simply because I was too lazy to make my oil concotio but I will soon! After the treatment, my hair felt really soft and moisturized and ready to be washed.

I then went in with my Carols Daughter Mirabelle Plum Sulfate Free Shampoo and gosh! Do I just love this stuff!!!! It smells amazing, completely cleanses my scalp, lathers a whole lot and most importantly, doesn’t dry out my hair. I now wash my hair going all backwards instead of in sections as I previously did which reduces my breakage and shedding.

After shampooing, I applied my moisture deep conditioner mix within consisted of the Carols Daughter Mirabelle Plum Hair Mask, Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner, Creme of Nature Intensive Conditioning Treatment, VO5 Raspberry Conditioner, Coconut oil, Tea tree oil, castor oil and Argan oil. I applied it to my hair after squeezing out the excess water, in four sections and let it sit for about 4-5 hours while I did some chores about the house.

I then rinsed, Detangled under running water in the shower and completed with the Carol’s Daughter Mirabelle Plum Conditioner and a cold water rinse. I proceeded to t-shirt dry my hair until it was about 60% dry and I allowed it to air dry to 80%.

Subsequently, I moisturized and sealed my hair in four sections using my Creme of Nature Leave-in Conditioner Spray, Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizer and coconut oil. I also applied some Carols Daughter Monoi Anti-Breakage Treatment to my ends since I am really trying to preserve the health of my ends. I also applied some of my ORS Olive Oil Hair Pudding to slick down my edges since my new growth is quite thick.

I kept it simple and styled my hair in a twist and tuck bun with a small flat twist at the front. I plan to take down this protective style on Wednesday or Thursday for my mid week co-wash! I will be doing a post on my new co-wash days eventually but right now I am still ironing out my co-wash regimen and experimenting with what my hair needs on a mid-weekly basis.

I definitely noticed that since I have introduced co-washing into my hair regimen, my hair has been shedding and breaking less, it’s easier to manage and less tangled. Not to mention, I am seeing significant growth which is awesome!

My shedding this week was very minimal especially for my hair being 9 weeks post relaxer! My hair is so easy to manage that I feel like if I’m one week post again! It’s definitely hair heaven.

Pictures? Sure why didn’t you say so earlier!

So as you can see ,my hair is becoming brown which is not its natural color! I believe the color change is the chemicals in the relaxer system and so I am planning to do a black color  rinse soon which is exciting as it will be the first time that I am coloring my hair!

I hope you enjoyed this post. Don’t forget to follow me on IG@iam_misstress and follow my blog for loads of hair fun! Comment below telling me about your washday and leave tips on how you combat shedding and breakage! Have a great week😊
